Kathryn Tong, WG’07

 

As the CEO of Sapphire Health, Kathryn currently advises health care organizations, private equity investors, entrepreneurs, and other participants in health care.  

Prior to starting her advisory roles, she was Senior Vice President of value-based care for US Renal Care where she was responsible for standing up their new business unit that partnered with payers looking to delegate financial risk for the management of late-stage CKD patients.  Kathryn joined US Renal Care in January 2021 after serving as the Senior Vice President for Payer, Analytics and Clinical Transformation at US Oncology/McKesson, the largest community-based oncology physician group in the country.  Under her leadership, US Oncology negotiated managed care contracts of $30M, exceeding FY2020 goals, securing 70 new value-based care contracts with such commercial payers as UHC, Humana, Aetna and Cigna.  US Oncology also became the largest participant in the CMS Oncology Care Model, saving Medicare over $35M in oncology spend. 

Before that she held several executive level positions at UnitedHealthcare and Optum, including SVP of product and solution sales for Optum Medicaid Solutions, SVP of corporate partnerships of Optum, and VP of Medicare Advantage clinical programs of UnitedHealthcare.  Notable accomplishments during her long tenure at UHC/Optum include winning large Medicaid contracts in Wyoming, New York, and Nebraska with a combined value of $88M. 

Throughout her over 20 years of experience in healthcare, Kathryn is known as an executive change agent that transforms cultures and builds high-performing teams that enable profitable growth.  

She lives in Southern California and enjoys long hikes with her husband, daughter and son.  Kathryn attended Swarthmore College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in 2001.  She obtained her MBA at the Wharton School of Business in 2007.
