Ian Tong, MD

Dr. Ian Tong is a board-certified medical doctor of Internal Medicine and serves as an advisor to Included Health. He has spent the last 15 years as a digital health leader, most recently serving as Chief Medical Officer at Doctor On Demand and Included Health.

As a clinical educator at Stanford for 17 years, Dr. Tong taught and mentored numerous medical students in bedside physical diagnosis and doctor-patient relationship. Prior to joining Doctor On Demand as Medical Director in 2013, he was Medical Director of Veterans Outreach at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System - the Nation’s “Most Wired VA.” In this role, he became interested in using technology to improve patient outreach and eventually founded THRIVE (The Health Resource Initiative for Veterans Everywhere), which was honored in 2008 with the VA Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Service to Homeless Veterans. This early exposure to telemedicine resulted in the opportunity to build the virtual care practice of Doctor On Demand and Included Health.

At Included Health, Dr. Tong has maintained a focus on clinical quality while improving patient and clinician experience. He has helped to shape digital health innovation through service on the Joint Commission Telemedicine Advisory Panel, CDC antimicrobial stewardship initiatives, and as a board member of the Family Caregiver Alliance.

Dr. Tong earned a medical degree from The University of Chicago-Pritzker. He completed residency and a chief residency at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He was recognized in 2021 by National Medical Fellowships with the Excellence in Medicine Award. He lives in northern California with his wife and three children.
