Hisham M. Valiuddin, DO, WG’22, Keith C. Hemmert, MD, and Erika James, PhD

Hisham M. Valiuddin, DO is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and serves as the Assistant Medical Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and as an Associate Fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. He provides expertise in strategic operations for hospital leadership, including implementation of innovative workflows and expansion of enterprise. He previously served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians and served as the Past President of the Emergency Resident Association of Michigan.

Dr. Valiuddin is a physician executive who focuses on improving healthcare delivery. He has a keen interest in healthcare leadership, finance, and innovation. He is passionate about developing world-class healthcare organizations and creating value for patients and shareholders. He has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and presented at numerous national conferences on the topics of impactful healthcare transformation and improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Valiuddin received his B.S. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics from Towson University. He attended medical school at LECOM Bradenton before completing an Emergency Medicine residency at Trinity Health St. Mary Mercy Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. He is currently pursuing a fellowship at Penn Medicine in EM Administration, Operations, and Leadership and obtaining an MBA from the Wharton School.

Keith C. Hemmert, MD, is a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as the Medical Director for the Emergency Department at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). In this capacity, he has led a number of notable projects, including implementation of a novel vertical flow model of care in the HUP ED; implementation of an Observation Unit-based COVID accelerated care pathway that minimizes hospitalization duration for medically appropriate COVID patients; transition planning for a new hospital pavilion, which will include a two-floor ED; implementation of a fifth generation troponin assay for the early detection of myocardial infarction; and development of a ‘digital twin’ simulation of the ED used to better forecast and meet future operational needs.  His academic interests include analysis of causes of and strategies to mitigate ED crowding, analysis of the impact of a split flow care model, optimizing admission strategies in a multi-hospital health system, and geriatric emergency care from an operational perspective.

Dr. Hemmert is the Associate Director of the Fellowship for Emergency Medicine Administration, Operations, and Leadership, a joint program between the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also serves on the Committee for Emergency Medicine Administration and Clinical Operations for the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine and has served as a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery. 

Dr. Hemmert completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident. He attended New York University School of Medicine after receiving an AB, with honors, in Philosophy from Harvard University. He resides in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania with his wife, Melanie, their twins Lillian and George, and their dog, Buckley. In his spare time, he enjoys running, cooking, sailing, and travel.


Erika H. James became Dean of the Wharton School on July 1, 2020. Trained as an organizational psychologist, Dean James is a leading expert on crisis leadership, workplace diversity, and management strategy.

Prior to her appointment at Wharton, she was the John H. Harland Dean at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School from 2014 to 2020.  An award-winning educator, accomplished consultant, and researcher, she is the first woman and first person of color to be appointed dean in Wharton’s 139-year history. As such she has paved the way for women in leadership both in education and corporate America. Dean James has been instrumental in developing groundbreaking executive education programs, including the Women’s Leadership program at the University of Virginia’s Darden School. 

Known internationally, Dean James was named as one of the “Top 10 Women of Power in Education” by Black Enterprise and as one of the “Power 100” by Ebony. She has been quoted as an expert thought leader by the Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, CNN.com, and numerous other media outlets. 

In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dean James is a board member of SurveyMonkey, a California-based market research and customer-experience company, the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), and several organizations that align with her passion for education and advancing women in business. Additionally, she serves as an advisory board member to Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management and as an executive board member to the Indian School of Business.  She also serves on the board of Save the Children, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children through better education, health care, and economic opportunities.  

Dean James holds a Ph.D. and Master’s degree in organizational psychology from the University of Michigan, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Pomona College of the Claremont Colleges in California.
