Wharton Global Health Volunteers (WGHV) is a student-run organization that connects MBA students and opportunity-rich, resource-poor healthcare organizations in developing countries for semester-long, pro-bono consulting projects. The group’s goal is to not only enrich the educational and professional experiences of students, but also to advance healthcare equity internationally. With careful project and team selection, along with the support of the Healthcare Management (HCM) advisors, the organization is committed to applying expertise to address pressing challenges faced by healthcare organizations globally.
During the Spring 2024 semester the WGHV partnered with two client organizations in Bangalore, India, to solve some of their most impactful business problems.
The first client, Wysa, is focused on improving mental health for previously underserved groups through its app-based artificial intelligence-supported chatbot that provides clinical-level mental healthcare.
WGHV helped Wysa articulate its tech product offerings to a non-technical investor audience, refine the company’s investor pitch to better capture the product value proposition, and assess the viability of entering new market segments in the U.S. and Europe. The WGHV team of four, led by Christian DiGiacomo (WG’25), was able to tackle these questions over the course of the semester, with the final segments of work completed live in Bangalore in May. Christian reflects on the experience, sharing that “this project gave us the opportunity to work with a mature organization by WGHV standards and see their amazing technology first-hand. With so much of the Wysa team focused on day-to-day operations and near-term scaling, our team was able to add considerable value by helping them think about how to grow over the next five years and articulate their strategy and real AI prowess among the noise of new AI-focused start-ups."
Wysa project recap: WGHV supported Wysa to 1) articulate their tech product offerings to a non-technical investor audience 2) pressure-test and refine their current investor pitch to ensure it captures all relevant aspects of their value proposition and 3) help Wysa assess the viability of entering new market segments in the US and EUR
The second client, Proactive for Her, is a leading provider of women’s healthcare services in Bangalore, India.
Proactive for Her stands out for its holistic focus on women’s health, providing a wide range of services including treatments for various conditions, lab tests and vaccinations, and access to experts such as fertility specialists. A WGHV team, led by Sara Meadow (WG ‘25) and Ivy Chen (WG ‘25) helped Proactive define a product strategy for planned and potential new product lines in the fertility and vaccine markets and identify expansion opportunities for new B2B partners and geographies. Sara describes that “working with Proactive for Her was an incredibly rewarding experience that allowed us to explore growth and marketing strategies through the lenses of a mission-driven organization. The experience helped Proactive develop valuable new strategies and test new social media marketing approaches in real-time with our team, and it gave our team firsthand insight into the complexities of scaling women’s health and vaccine offerings in new markets.”
