Dr. Vin Gupta is a prominent American pulmonologist and public health expert who operates at the intersection of healthcare, innovation and communications. He has a multidisciplinary background: as a practicing pulmonologist with 10 year + military background with the US Air Force Reserves, Dr. Gupta’s first career phase focused on pandemic preparedness and global health. With roles spanning the US Centers for Disease Control’s Emerging Infections Program, World Bank Group, the China’s Centers for Disease Control, and the Pentagon’s Center for Global Health Engagement, Vin spent several years (2008-2016) focused on researching and bolstering preparedness efforts for pandemic flu worldwide. This work resulted in over 25 first authored papers, including several in leading medical journals including The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, and British Medical Journal.
Vin’s second career phase has focused on health technology and its practical application in patient care. In the final year of his pulmonary fellowship, Vin began working part-time with the Apple clinical team on the Series 6 Apple Watch and its oxygen monitoring features. His work contributed to the launch of this feature in 2020. Soon after, Vin was recruited to Amazon, where he worked for over 5.5 years in a variety of health services leadership roles. This included being Chief Medical Officer of Amazon Pharmacy and New Health Initiatives, where he oversaw clinical quality and safety efforts for the organization, including helping to accelerate growth initiatives across key priority areas. Currently, Vin is the Managing Director of Healthcare Innovation for Manatt Health, a subsidiary of Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, LLP (based in New York City). His portfolio includes working with over 30 large healthcare systems and the AHA on design and implementation of generative AI tools, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services. He also oversees a broad portfolio in digital health and life sciences.
Separately to his clinical and technology roles, Vin serves as a medical analyst for NBC News Media Group, contributing across NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC. His public health communication work, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, has earned multiple recognitions for its clarity and effectiveness, and he is often described as one of America’s most recognizable healthcare figures. Dr. Gupta earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton, Medical Doctorate from Columbia, master’s in public administration from Harvard, and master’s in international relations from the University of Cambridge. He completed his medical training at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a national board member of the American Lung Association.
