In Part 1 of this two-part series, I discussed ADHD – misconceptions and stereotypes, a deficient-oriented perspective, the loss of potential and creativity, and the suffering caused by a world that typically requires neurodivergent people to conform to a framework that does not accommodate, much less honor and celebrate diversity.
In Part 2, I will cover the changes needed to overcome these man-made barriers which limit not just the ADHDer but also negatively impact us all collectively. One such crucial area is the need for the scientific community and society at large to adopt a more balanced and nuanced understanding of ADHD. We need to start investing in studies that determine optimal environments for all neurotypes to thrive.
The Impact of Stigma and Diagnosis Requirements
Rather than respecting a person’s request for certain modifications to workflow or environmental stimulus based on professional courtesy, society demands a diagnosis prior to honoring these needs. Yet, society has made it very difficult to get an ADHD diagnosis. This requirement reflects an inherent bias that demands individuals prove their neurodiversity to receive validation and support. Furthermore, for years there has been so much stigma associated with ADHD that many of us who were diagnosed in the early '90s, and for 25 years thereafter, guarded our truth with our lives. We faced immense pressure to conform, often experiencing significant mental and emotional distress. Many of us try to keep that secret from being exposed, fearing judgment, discrimination, and misunderstanding from those around us. ADHDers have been found to be 5 times more likely to attempt suicide than neurotypical people.
The Societal Challenge
One of the most harmful misconceptions is that ADHD needs to be "fixed" or "cured." This perspective stems from a societal bias towards a neurotypical way of functioning.
ADHD is not the problem, and it is not a defect. It’s a natural neurological variation that results in a different way of thinking and processing the world. The challenge lies not within the ADHD individual but within a society that demands conformity to a rigid structure designed to maintain the status quo.
The real challenge is a society predominantly structured for neurotypical individuals. Educational systems, workplaces, and social expectations are all designed with a specific neurotype in mind. This assumption leaves those of us who are neurodiverse at a significant disadvantage, not because we are incapable, but because the environment is not conducive to our ways of thinking and functioning.
ADHDers often possess remarkable creativity, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to hyperfocus on tasks that engage their curiosity. This, coupled with their often keen sense of justice, low tolerance for hypocrisy and deception, ability to conceptualize things never seen before, and finely tuned empathy, means many ADHDers are genetically hardwired to solve the world's most complex problems.
When fostered and encouraged in an ideal environment, ADHDers make brilliant scientists, inventors, athletes, and artists. Think Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates. But it is more often the case than not that ADHDers are punished, teased, misunderstood, overlooked, and dismissed so much in their childhood that by adulthood they have lost connection with their sense of self, no longer trust their own instincts, don’t know what their natural gifts are anymore, and are too afraid to remove their masks to find out.
Reclaim a Lost Opportunity
As is so often the case, society enforces norms that limit potential. Embracing neurodiversity by creating environments that do not demand conformity will benefit all neurotypes. By eliminating the demand for masking and valuing natural ways of thinking, we can unlock immense creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving potential, driving societal progress. Recognizing and supporting neurodiversity enhances our collective ability to thrive in a complex world.
Both neurotypical and ADHD neurotypes offer valuable strengths. Neurotypical individuals excel in structured environments, adhering to societal norms and expectations through efficient executive functioning. On the other hand, individuals with ADHD bring creativity, adaptability, and out-of-the-box thinking, often thriving in dynamic and novel situations. Recognizing and protecting the integrity of these natural designs, rather than forcing conformity, is crucial for leveraging the strengths of each neurotype. Encouraging neurodiversity allows individuals to capitalize on their inherent abilities, leading to personal fulfillment and societal advancement.
Society stands to gain immensely from embracing neurodiversity, particularly by supporting individuals with ADHD in developing their natural tendencies. When people with ADHD are not forced to mask their behaviors and instead are encouraged to nurture their unique cognitive styles, they can contribute significantly to innovation and creative problem-solving. By fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse cognitive profiles, we can unlock the full potential of all individuals, leading to greater happiness, health, and success across the population.
What’s Next?
There are glimmers of hope as some things are starting to change. The rise of social media has provided a platform for individuals with ADHD to share their experiences, build supportive communities, and advocate for better understanding and acceptance. These online spaces have become sanctuaries where we can express our true selves without fear of stigma. However, the presence of these platforms alone is not enough to dismantle deeply ingrained societal biases.
We need to change the narrative around ADHD. This means shifting from a deficit-focused perspective to one that recognizes and values the strengths and contributions of neurodiverse individuals. We need to create environments that feel safe and productive for everyone — environments that don’t require special accommodations to be made, because they are inherently inclusive by design. Cultures that don’t require people to self-identify to be treated with respect. This is a significant shift from the current state, where special accommodations are often seen as exceptions rather than the norm.
Moreover, we need to create a society based on the premise that everyone is neurodistinct, each of us deserving respect, acceptance, and the opportunity to thrive as we are. This shift in thinking means fostering workplaces, schools, and public spaces that celebrate diversity in all its forms and understand that neurodiversity is a natural and valuable part of human variation. It’s about recognizing that the "one-size-fits-all" approach is outdated and counterproductive.
By embracing an inclusive mindset, we can move towards a future where people with ADHD and other neurodiverse conditions are not just accommodated, but genuinely valued for their unique perspectives and abilities. It’s about building a world where everyone has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully, without the need to mask their true selves or fight for recognition. This is not just a benefit for those with ADHD; it’s a step towards a more innovative, empathetic, and just society for all.
Here are a few concrete steps that can be taken:
- We have a lot of work to do to make our collective experience infinitely better. If neurotypical-style studies are going to be done to better understand the neurodiverse experience, they should start by determining the percentage of the population that is not supported or served within the limitations of our current societal constructs. Then focus on breaking down biases and social norms.
- We can focus our attention and efforts on getting the ADHD name changed and embrace one that truly reflects the strengths and potential of this neurotype. Cast your vote on my proposed options, or suggest one of your own. My personal favorite is Integrated Neuronetwork Design Intelligence (INDI). But all the names reflect the unique strengths and positive attributes associated with ADHD, emphasizing creativity, adaptability, and innovative thinking. They also honor the essential and vital nature of this neurotype, moving away from deficit-focused terminology to a more empowering and inclusive language.

In conclusion, fostering a neuro-inclusive society requires a fundamental shift in how we perceive and accommodate neurodiversity. This article has been my rally cry, my “Jerry Maguire moment,” my attempt to get your attention and inspire you to start challenging the societal norms that limit human potential. By understanding and valuing the unique strengths of all neurotypes, we can create environments that nurture the potential within each individual. This shift will not only benefit those with ADHD and other neurodiverse conditions, but it will enrich our collective human experience, leading to greater innovation, empathy, and societal progress. It's time to rethink our approach, challenge outdated norms, and build a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive just as they are. Embracing neurodiversity is not just a moral imperative but a path to a more vibrant and dynamic future for all.

It's time to ditch the outdated label "ADHD" and embrace a name that truly reflects the strengths and potential of this neurotype. For too long, the term ADHD has carried a stigma, emphasizing deficits and disorders instead of celebrating the unique cognitive abilities that come with this neurodivergence. By redefining how we talk about ADHD, we can foster a more inclusive and empowering narrative.

Lifetime Prevalence of Natural and Causal Neurodiversity in Adults (Ages 22 to 65)
Natural Neurodiversity refers to neurological differences that are part of the natural variation within the human population, often present from birth or early childhood. These include conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, dyslexia, and others. Here are the estimated lifetime prevalence rates for these conditions:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Approximately 2% of the adult population (boostneurodiversity.com).
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Around 4.4% of adults (Springer).
- Dyslexia: Estimates range from 5-10% of the population (neurodiversity.guru).
- Dyspraxia: Approximately 2-6% (boostneurodiversity.com).
- Dyscalculia: Estimated around 3-6% (boostneurodiversity.com).
- Dysgraphia: Around 5-20% in childhood, with many continuing into adulthood (Springer)
- Tourette Syndrome: Less than 1% (boostneurodiversity.com).
Adding these percentages together gives us a total of 21.4% to 29.4%. However, due to comorbidities (e.g., individuals with ADHD often also have dyslexia), a more conservative estimate would be around 15-20% of the adult population being naturally neurodiverse.
Causal Neurodiversity includes neurological changes resulting from specific causes such as traumatic brain injury, mental health disorders, or other medical conditions. Here are the estimated lifetime prevalence rates for these conditions:

Adding these percentages together gives us a total of 105.4%. However, due to high comorbidity rates (e.g., individuals with PTSD often also have depression or anxiety), a more conservative estimate would be around 30-40% of the adult population experiencing causal neurodiversity.
Total Prevalence: By combining the adjusted estimates for natural and causal neurodiversity and accounting for overlaps, the overall percentage of the adult population (ages 22 to 65) affected by either natural or causal neurodiversity is estimated to be around 45-50%. This takes into account the high rates of comorbidity among the various conditions.
These estimates highlight the significant portion of the population affected by neurological and mental health conditions, emphasizing the importance of creating inclusive environments and support systems for individuals with diverse neurological profiles.
