Jin Ge, MD, MBA, WG'15

Dr. Jin Ge is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and a graduate of both the Perelman School of Medicine and The Wharton School (WG'15), where he completed his MBA in Health Care Management as a Palmer Scholar. His career has been devoted to the question now driving this conference: how the health system makes disciplined, high-stakes bets on artificial intelligence at a moment when the status quo is no longer affordable.

At UCSF, Dr. Ge serves as Director of Clinical Artificial Intelligence for the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and as Medical Director of Cardiac-Related Liver Diseases for UCSF Transplant, with joint appointments in the UCSF/UC Berkeley Joint Program in Computational Precision Health. He is a practicing transplant hepatologist who does not merely study AI, but also design it, embed it in live clinical workflows, and rigorously evaluate whether it improves care.

His NIH-funded research program applies large language models and natural language processing to real electronic health record data. It includes CirrhosisRx, a clinical decision support system now under evaluation in a pragmatic randomized controlled trial, LiVersa, a retrieval-augmented hepatology consultation tool, and ambient-voice methods to detect covert hepatic encephalopathy during routine visits. A parallel line of work uses LLMs to illuminate the psychosocial and social factors that influence access to liver transplantation.

The interdisciplinary training he received at Penn (clinical medicine at Perelman, strategy and management at Wharton) is precisely what shapes how he approaches scaling AI responsibly across a strained, expensive system. As a frequent invited speaker at the AASLD, Digestive Disease Week, and the American College of Surgeons, he would welcome the opportunity to return to Huntsman Hall and share what it takes to move generative AI from demonstration to dependable, deployed care.
