Associate, Supply Chain

(Posted 9/10/2016)  Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), Massachusetts

Founded in 2002 by President William J. Clinton, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to strengthening integrated health systems around the world and expanding access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria and other illnesses. Based on the premise that business oriented strategy can facilitate solutions to global health challenges, CHAI acts as a catalyst to mobilize new resources and optimize the impact of these resources to save lives, via improved organization of commodity markets and more effective local management. By working in association with governments and other NGO partners, CHAI is focused on large scale impact and, to date, CHAI has secured lower pricing agreements for treatment options in more than 70 countries. In addition, CHAI's teams are working side-by-side with over 30 governments to tackle many of the largest barriers to effective treatment and care.CHAI works in close partnership with country governments as well as with implementing partners and other major stakeholders to identify the key obstacles to access and scale-up of essential health services, and to develop sustainable strategies to overcome them. To do this, CHAI applies diverse approaches and skills, beyond the ones traditionally used in global health, including those from the private sector.

CHAI is driven by its mission and a set of values that are integral to its work.

Overview of CHAI's Vaccines program
Immunization is one of the most successful public health interventions in history. National immunization programs reach >100 million infants every year and have averted globally two to three million deaths every year since the launch of the Expanded Program for Immunization (EPI) in 1974[1], whilst the new pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) and rotavirus vaccines could save ~1 million lives per year[2]. Furthermore, great advances in discovering and financing new vaccines provides a great opportunity for countries to further reduce burden of disease such as human papillomavirus (HPV) or malaria. Despite these successes, 1.5 million children still die each year of vaccine-preventable diseases, many of them in low-income countries, as immunization programs there face unprecedented challenges.

In 2010, CHAI launched a vaccine program to reduce mortality and morbidity from vaccine preventable diseases by improving access to immunization services through national immunization programs. Since then, CHAI has become a core partner in the immunization space and is pursuing four complementary strategic objectives:

1. Increase the speed and efficiency with which new vaccines are introduced and reach target coverage.
2. Improve the effectiveness and efficiency of vaccines cold chain and logistics systems: CHAI aims to increase and sustain effective immunization coverage of existing and new vaccines by enhancing (1) the safety and potency of vaccines administered, (2) the adequacy of immunization supplies when and where they are needed, and (3) the value for money of the vaccine delivery system.
3. Enhance planning, resourcing & implementation of immunization strategies: CHAI aims to improve the systems and capabilities of national and sub-national vaccines programs in focus countries to develop and implement robust immunization strategies, as well as to sustainably improve key outcomes from these strategies
4. Improve pricing and offering of key vaccines and cold chain equipments by shaping markets and negotiating price reductions for major antigens and cold chain equipment and by accelerating introduction of appropriate and valuable new cold chain technologies.

CHAI's vaccine program very closely supports the national immunization programs in eight focus countries: Cameroon, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. CHAI's vaccine program also engages with global stakeholders such as Gavi, WHO and UNICEF to inform global policies and practices.
